Just got a thinkpad x40 on ebay, and I had some problems with it.
Any "real work" (building/untarring) was causing soft errors:

I then disabled dma altogether (flags 0xfcc), and did a byte for byte
read on the disk using dd overnight.
When I returned, dd had exited with "io error" and dmesh shows:
