I set up Ampache a while ago and found it buggy, but it appears it's had a lot of development since then. I had better luck with Jinzora, it was functional but still kind of buggy. I wouldn't put either on an unprotected network. I used it to control mpd which connected to my stereo via a usb toslink box.
