I write this partly as a reply to my message from May 18, 2008:

To cut it short:
The kernel panics on boot if the drive is empty or open.
I can boot if there is a blank cd or dvd in the drive.
Some nonempty discs also cause a panic.
It also panics if I try to mount a cd / dvd.
I can boot from cd.
