The TightVNC server is based on really old X, and is quite unportable. See if x11vnc fits what you want to do with VNC instead. And try it with the ssvnc viewer, it's loads faster than tightvnc-viewer (if you use the -current version of the ssvnc port it includes the frontend which makes running x11vnc easier).
