Hello, fellow OpenBSD people.

I recently got one of those dumb usb external drives, the ones with  
windows -only backup software included and an "auto-sleep" feature and  
metallic-colored plastic claiming to be metal. It's a "1TB" Seagate  
FreeAgent Desk, although it actually only appears to be a little over  
900 GB. I deleted the backup software and reformatted it by newfs-ing it  
to ffs. The system recognizes it and mounts it using the umass0 driver.

When I tried copying my data onto it, my system crashed about 80  
gigabytes into the transfer. I couldn't exit X, I couldn't hibernate;  
nothing. Had to hold down the power key.

I looked through my logs and found this piece of evidence:

Just FYI, there are a number of Seagates out there that have bad
firmware.  The firmware "fix" that Seagate put out makes the drives
behave badly on the bus.

Might be a reason.

  
Thanks; I checked up on this just now - it seems that the firmware for 
the new terabyte Seagate drives has a bug that makes the drives freeze 
up. I ripped the drive out of the enclosure, and sure enough, the model 
number indicated firmware updatability.
