dd is a bit simplistic. rsync would be rather useful here, to keep a
mirror up-to-date. This probably works best on filesystems, not raw
drivers, but should work in either case.

rsync is well-known, trusted, and works over ssh.

dd can be used to copy data. Thereafter, you could, for instance, extend
the last partition and the filesystem on it. Of course, this is
system-specific and I don't really know a lot about Solaris.
