Are you sure you are using bash? Anyway if bash can use MAILPATH (which wouldn't do what you want anyway) then it may also set MAIL=somepath and you can delete (or comment it so it doesn't work) and logout and login again and look at your env R/ *** NOTE *** Please DO NOT CC me.
