John the Ripper limited functionality

The jumbo patch for JTR has a lot of great features but in order to use it you 
need to compile from source as opposed to installing from packages (or Ports). 
I think packages should have it patched by default...JTR without this jumbo 
patch seems very limited in comparison in terms of its abilities and options. 
What do you guys think?
