After spending the last hour on this:

I'm actually wondering why we bother, and if we should not just kill the
support for pre-1.0.0 OpenSSL at configure time and get rid of the check
for good.
Any maintainer of a package that runs on a system that still uses <1.0.0
wants to object ?
