That's strange, works for me:

$ sudo smtpctl show queue
$ echo test | mail tempfai...@opensmtpd.org
$ sudo smtpctl show queue
100619e9099a90da|local|mta|auth|gil...@lappy.poolp.org|tempfai...@opensmtpd.org|tempfai...@opensmtpd.org|1435618117|1435963717|0|1|pending|397|451

can you tell me which operating system you are using ?
how/where did you build / install smtpd ?

can you reproduce ?
the tempfai...@opensmtpd.org address can be used to test for this.

please let me know as soon as you can, this is the last pending issue
before I tag the 5.7.1 release.
