This is awesome advice and the bit I was missing too. I somewhat solved it by 
using dnsbl (I used the fact that the email messages causing backscatter were 
coming from blacklisted sources), but now I don’t have to use filters at all 
(which was my goal, as the filter api is experimental and therefore filters are 
not supported). 

Brilliant, thanks a lot for that. Such an obvious thing when explained well, 
but for some reason it never crossed my mind to look at LMTP..
