From: Mary Byrne Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2014 7:04 AM To: Fred Ellison Subject: Invitation to an Evening with Dr. Sandra Stotsky (Common Core Whistle Blower)
Fred, This is to invite you to hear Dr. Sandra Stotsky tonight in Springfield, MO. Dr. Stotsky is the courageous member of the Common Core validation committee who rejected common core state standards for English Language Arts because they would not prepare America's children for college level work. In Missouri, and around the country parents and teachers have rejected the implementation of Common Core State Standards and the tests aligned to them. You may have seen Monday's Bloomberg article about New Yorkers' rejection of Common Core http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2014-10-20/andrew-cuomo-concedes-defeat-in-the-common-core-wars Come find out why the opposition to the common core state standards has grown, and why Missourians must continue to develop and implement our own set of academic standards and tests. Dr. Sandra Stotsky, professor emerita in the Department of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas, will be speaking on the Common Core State Standards in Springfield, MO. The free event is open to the public. It will be held Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Doling Family Center, 301 East Talmage. Stotsky, who served on the national validation committee for the Common Core State Systemic Initiative (2009-2010), is known nationwide for her in-depth analyses of the problems in Common Core’s English language arts standards. She is credited with developing one of the country’s strongest sets of academic standards for K-12 students as well as the strongest academic standards and licensure tests for prospective teachers while serving as Senior Associate Commissioner in the Massachusetts Department of Education from 1999-2003. Stotsky has addressed numerous state boards of education and legislators on bills, licensure tests and standards, as well as Common Core standards.
