Hi Esther,

have a look at the MITK tutorial applications. You can turn them on by 
setting MITK_BUILD_TUTORIAL to ON in your CMake configuration. They 
should already do what you need, e.g. Step3 just loads an image/dicom 
series and you can change slices with the mouse wheel, Step4 adds a few 
sliders for navigation

To display an X you could add a mitk::PointSet with a single point.
