Hi Esther, have a look at the MITK tutorial applications. You can turn them on by setting MITK_BUILD_TUTORIAL to ON in your CMake configuration. They should already do what you need, e.g. Step3 just loads an image/dicom series and you can change slices with the mouse wheel, Step4 adds a few sliders for navigation (http://mitk.org/documentation/doxygen/TutorialPage.html)
