Hi Thomas,

Writing a custom mapper that performs special rendering for your data object is 
probably the way to go. In the mapper's GenerateData() Method, you have access 
to the world geometry and screen geometry. You can instantiate arbitraty VTK 
actors that represent your object, including helper objects like your circles.

Take a look at http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/VTK/Examples/Cxx and 
http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/VTK/Tutorials for rendering examples, including 2D 
annotations in the 3D scene.
