you are right. We currently have someone who works on a better DICOM 
integration for MITK. This will surely be based on DCMTK. But at the current 
state it is hard to say when we will be able to offer the functionality to 
query a PACS. 

With CTK it should be possible to query a PACS. CTK is build over the MITK 
super build so you could try that. There is a ctkDICOMQueryRetrieveWidget which 
must be activated via cmake. If that is not working you could try to clone the 
CTK repository separately and build it. This should work.
