Hi Martin,

currently, the way you describe is the only approach. The plug-in 
service architecture predates the one for modules.

If you are still interested, could you please add a Bugzilla ticket 
(feature request) and I would start thinking about a migration of the 
service from the plug-in to the MITK Core module.
