I was fine with it personally; there are a few buttons where it
would have been nice to have the state represented by the LED,
eg EQ kill switches, touch-sensor switch, and the various buttons
I was eyeing up using for LADSPA, but I didn't feel it was a major
problem. For me, the major problem was that I just didn't enjoy staring
at a computer screen while mixing, especially with dilated pupils...
so when my Xponent went wrong it was a good excuse to ditch the
whole setup and go CDJ.

It might be possible by reverse engineering. There's precedent for
writing a GPL driver by that means (forcedeth) without hitting legal
difficulties.

Each button's LED lights up briefly when the button is pressed,
then fades out again. This happens within the console (ie nothing
to do with the USB/software), and is a feature I particularly liked
as it makes it obvious when a button press has registered. But to
get any of the LEDs to stay on must require some USB message -- it's
not clear whether it's MIDI or not; I tried firing a full sweep of
MIDI Note and CC messages at it without apparent success.

Indeed, and that includes the VU meters as well: they are just LEDs,
they don't really monitor the volume (alas).

It's just about usable as a mouse replacement, but really not great
by the standards of most laptop trackpads. I would be inclined to
stick with using it as a MIDI x-y controller instead, or at least
would be once LADSPA is properly integrated :)
