Hi everyone,

Development's been somewhat quiet over the last month since the 1.6.0
release, but there's a few important bug fixes in trunk that I'd like
to push out to our users. Since trunk might be undergoing some big
changes soon (namely the merge of Tom's MIDI branch), I'd like to try
to release 1.6.1 sometime next week as a bugfix release (if I have
time). There weren't any objections to this idea from the IRC crowd,
but let me know if anyone else has any.

Another thing I want to mention is that we need to pay slightly more
attention to copyrights in the future. About two weeks ago I received
an email from a company who owns the copyright to portions of the Natt
skin, which caught us by surprise. It turns out the author of the Natt
skin was unfamiliar with copyright law (plagiarizing parts of it), and
while we try our best to ensure that the skins we bundle with Mixxx
are licensable under the GPL, we need to be more careful about this in
the future. To be as explicit as possible, if anyone sends us a patch
or artwork that will be distributed with Mixxx, they must be the
original copyright holder and/or have the right to let us distribute
their code/art under the GPL. The next time we accept a skin, we must
make this very clear to the artist. To clean up the Natt mess, I had
to quietly rebuild and reupload all of our 1.6.0 packages, and I
removed all traces of the skin from the forum, the website, etc.
(Read: Not very much fun.)

On related note (and contrary to our current policy), I don't think
the GPL is appropriate for artwork. The GPL deals with code, and some
CC license probably makes way more sense. Is anyone a CC/GPL guru and
can advise us on relicensing our artwork?

Lastly, I've gotten a few cool ideas for stuff to add to Mixxx over
the last month. I'd like to try to clean up vinyl control a tiny bit
more (I have some uncommitted code), although I don't have my
turntables with me anymore, which is a bit of a problem. Just need to
find time to work on this stuff. :)

Thanks,
Albert
