I don't know if it's necessary to check, just to optimise, there's no reason _not_ to. I would expect that some reasonable optimisation would gain us a (small) performance boost, at the same time as not pushing nearly so much data through the MIDI bus. It's more that it makes debugging easier, and too much data too fast may upset some weaker firmwares and drivers (we were having this exact problem with the Herc drivers, until the devs fixed it - the excess data would cause something to think that a reset was occurring, and a whole lot of spurious events were triggered, making mixxx go a bit crazy).
