Hi everyone,

Mixxx 1.7.0 is going to be the first version of Mixxx that ships with
our logo embedded inside it (in the About screen). This got me thinking
about our art's licensing, copyright, and our trademark. There have been
several off-list discussions about these things at various points, and
now is a good time to summarize these for you.

Art Licensing
In our opinion, the GNU GPL isn't a suitable license for artwork, and we
should probably relicense our art. I think a Creative Commons license
would be clearer, but I don't fully understand the impact of this
license on our ability to be packaged for the Ubuntu and Debian
repositories. Can anyone advise?

Trademark
Embedding our logo inside Mixxx means we'll be licensing the logo under
some Creative Commons license or something along those lines. This will
mean that our logo will be "freely" distributable under copyright law.
However, we still fully reserve ownership rights to the Mixxx trademark,
and are prepared to enforce this against individuals, organizations, and
corporations who abuse it. Currently, what constitutes "abuse" is at our
discretion, but a public trademark policy on our website would help us
bring more transparency to this. What resources do we have to construct
a public trademark policy?

Thanks,
Albert
