Just a quick update: Both those branches are merged into 1.8 now. We're just doing a final round of bug fixes now.
I've also asked the Ubuntu Studio guys to package r1529 of PortAudio SVN (latest as of today), which should fix our dreaded deadlock on underrun problem in Mixxx.
