Hello there,
I found out about GSOC (and Mixxx being in it) fairly late. My name is Bart
Verstrynge, and I'm a Belgian student that likes C++/Qt for programming and
digital dj'ing for fun. Jep, the seemingly perfect match is what instantly
made me go for it.
I've already posted a proposal on the GSOC site, since I could update it
anyway (I know the deadline is like, tommorrow). Some comments or
suggestions would be lovely. I went for the "Advanced Library Search"
project since it appeals to me most, and I will introduce an additional idea
I had for this project here.
The idea that has been playing inside my head is called the
"Context-operator" (more awesomeness to the name could be added later on).
This operator will allow the dj to make searches that are relevant to the
currently playing track(s). This way the dj will be able to select the next
track on the go, without a lot of preparation. Maybe an example could
clarify my idea:
Say I am playing an electro song at 130bpm. I'd now like to mix in something
that fits, but don't know what. My library is fairly large, and I have no
time whatsoever to go through all the songs since most of them "won't" be
good candidates for the next song. So I want to skip those. By searching for
"$bpm$genre", a context-search would bring up all the songs relevant to the
currently playing track(s), based on bpm first, then genre and in
prioritised by the best matching. Note that instead of searching for a
concrete value for a field (eg, bpm:>130), we specify whát fields need to be
matched as close as possible. Also note additional syntactical sugar can be
used to decide what deck has to be matched (eg, A$bpm$genre). I really think
this would be a nice feature that I haven't seen in other dj software.
Although this project (with my own addition) would be my first choice, I
would rather do some other project (Session history feature, autoDJ
improvement in order) than nothing at all. I really feel like Mixxx is the
right place for me to be and I don't intend to be proposing projects for any
other opensource groups.
Any comments or suggestions on what to do next or what to add/edit/elaborate
in the GSOC proposal would be great!
