IMO further work to improve the keyboard mapping system should consolidate it into the controller mapping system so it can be scripted. Pressing a button on a controller should be able to do just as much as pressing a button on a keyboard. I'm not sure this is something that could fit into a GSoC project.
The Preferences window sure could use a lot of thoughtful design work. Search functionality would be nice. You may want to look at KDE's system preferences window, which uses the same Qt toolkit that Mixxx does. I don't know how much of that require KDE libraries though.
