Strange.. I'm also admin MariaDB and fairly high traffic site but
haven't seen behavior like this.. should we shut down mixxx.org (put
static page on forum and main page) and stress test it with some tool
like apache stress tester when what crashes the site. I expect you have
run http://mysqltuner.com/ or some similar tool from percona to see what
assumptions it makes. That tool have been life saver couple time but it
requires that you have have MySQL/MariaDB running at least couple hours
or in best situation days to have most relevant info.

It's been running for a little over 15 minutes with traffic coming
through and we are only using ~285M of RAM, w/ 8M swap used.
Given that we had applied our really aggressive small memory
tuning for 5.1 to 5.7 and 5.7 still consumed all the memory and
swap and killed the box (several times) within minutes of being
asked to handle requests, I would advise people to steer well
clear of MySQL 5.7, if you're planning to run in a small footprint
VM/docker container or Raspberry Pi-like device use MariaDB or
Percona instead.
