I don't think this is such a far-fetched goal. Manufacturers have been increasingly open about their controllers in the last few years. For example, Novation has published firmware for the Launchpad Pro:
and Ableton published documentation and a demo application for the Push 2:

I'd imagine it would be nicer to write code for Ctlra than write a big manual with words.
