        Make a VHS or 8mm tape to send to someone?  I could see doing the
        capture, editing and so on with DV and then record a tape to send
        off.

        Are you capturing at full frame (640x480) for going to DVD or SVCD?  ;)
        
        The WinTV cards are great for watching TV and doing VCD resolution
        work but I found it to be a lot of work to get DVDsized movies made
        with them.

        Oh, I don't do much at all with TV - broadcast TV reception's terrible
        where I am and there's not enough worth watching (for me) to justify
        the expense of cable.   

        Others have mentioned a remote setup and doing all the TV recording
        (and induction into a MySQL database, etc) with a Canopus box being
        used for the data.
