I too have a SUSE 8.1, but I use a 2.4.20 Kernel and the CVS zoran
driver.

The tell that they use the 0.8 version. Which might cause troubles. (I
have never looked to close at the package)

Try recording without sound (-a0). Maybe you have a problem with the
sound card or the alsa driver if you use alsa. Or maybe something else. 

BTW: Suse does not include mpeg2enc, mp2enc and mplex in the RPM
Package.
