I hear ya! This is the kind of stuff I do on the side as well. Nothing wrong with pure perl OO modules tho. I use them whenever I can.
We are in the market for a treadmill as well - but it seems your project is going to add a few more pounds!. Maybe if we can figure out a way to power the linux box with the treadmill while working on the project! Anyway, using DBI with perl is the way to go for sure.
