        mplex has the '-r' option:

                --mux-bitrate|-r num

        Mplex calculates the muxed rate from the input streams so normally
        the -r is not needed. I haven't needed to use 'r' to mplex in ages.

        I suspect you're encountering another buglet that's since been fixed.

        Upgrade from the old release to the CVS version.   Either a cvs 
        checkout or pull in the nightly tarballs that are prepared from
        CVS - the 2GB limit bug was fixed eons ago but a new release has
        never been made.

        That's normal and the correct way, as you mention, is to use time
        offsets within a single mpeg file.
