You can't go wrong with an AMD chipset. I've never thought much
of the VIA chips (problems abound with those it seems - the archives
of this group should have quite a few horror stories)
Alas, from what I've seen the best (but slightly more expensive)
way to get the AMD chipset is on a dual cpu board. You don't have
to run multiple cpus of course so you can save a bit of money that
way.
For up to the 2600+ cpus the Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW-P is a real nice
board. Overall though the best board at the moment appears to
be the Tyan 2466 (which has the benefit of an extra PCI slot compared
to the others).

Note the number of quirks, etc for the VIA chips ;(
There might be single cpu boards that use the AMD chipset - if so
one of those would, I think, save you some grief. For a bit more
money a dual cpu board would give expansion capability later on,
a pair of MP2400+ (or faster) cpus would be quite a boost ;)
