Edouard, another thing to try (something that I discovered) is that
if you're doing piping and file redirection, the type of shell you
use can play an effect in the 2GB limit problem.  I'm running a
standard RedHat7.3 release, and the csh that I normally use can't
handle 2GB files.  So when I pipe the bigger files, I switch to
using the bash shell -- because the version on RH7.3 handles 2G
files.
