AH ha! So it would seem that I was spot on for the cause of the
problematic playback (both hardware and software). With 9375 it
would not take a very large spike to drive the rate over the 10.08
maximum limit allowed by the DVD specs (just a few % over would be
enough). That also explains why software playback is struggling on
~1GHz systems (I'll leave it to your imagination what playing a HD
(1920x1080) resolution clip requires ;)).
There were some rate control fixes checked in for the encoder a day or
two ago - it could be that rebuilding mpeg2enc will solve the problem.
Very strange though that if you defaulted the rate (did not specify
-b) that the rate was up so high. I think that's was fixed by the
recent changes.
I think a cvs update and rebuild will do wonders in this case.
