That depends on what options you have used. A XP1400 should be able to
record at full size, if you use the jpeg-mmx from SF and not the default
jpeg libary. When you use the jpeg-mmx the decoding of a frame takes
only halfe the time. And something similair for encoding of the images. 

Have you tried recording at halfe size ? Or to the file /dev/null to see
if it is harddsik related problem. Or without sound, and looked if the
porbems still remain.

With ExportVideo comes a thing that can directly export the video to yuv
and wav:

Ever taken a look at streamer ? (part of the xawtv package) That tool
can also record a mjpeg encoded AVI. But has the kown 2GB filesize
limit.
