Reading this again, and reading the how-to section 6.5 I tried some cli 
experimentation.

It seems that LVS should be creating some files called blend1.avi, blend2.avi, 
etc or similar?  Nothing like this is being created.  The eli shows only the 
names of the avis and a list of frame-numbers for each,

I struggled a bit to understand 6.5, but then came up with

lavpipe "lav2yuv -o 255 -f 25 /Data/Cottingley/image01.avi" "lav2yuv -f 
25 /Data/Cottingley/image02.avi" blend1.pli
Segmentation fault

I had understood that this had to write something like an editlist which could 
then be piped through yuv2lav to create blend1.avi.  Maybe I have not 
understood it correctly, but if I have this looks like the cause of the 
problem I have with LVS not being able to create the blends.
