Thanks for pointing out this option that I had missed. It also turned out that my captures were better than I thought: the editor I was using made it look like there were dropped frames between clips where, in fact, there were not.

So the quicktime problem remains, but it irrelevant for me since I can just write to multiple avi's as you show. 'lavrec' captures as well as is physically possible from this tape, and it worked better in raw capture for me than the WinXP software that came with the card (1/3 dropped frames).
