If you're really just dealing with a sequence of still frames, then
you might try an image browser such as "gthumb" instead.  You can make
it full-screen and it has simple keystrokes and buttons to advance
forward/backward in the image set.  I've used it to view captured
video (after unpacking it to one frame per file) and from what I
remember if I held down the forward/backward button it played them at
around 30fps.
