You can be soure that a DVD player likes DVD's (obvious), very often
SVCD and VCD work too.

If you have different formats you might be interrested in mplayer and
the -vo option, a guide how that work can be found in the mjpeg-howot
section: Creating videos from other sources

Or take a look at the script anytovcd.sh (works well with DVD as output
format)
