Yes, I can record, but the resulting images show a zig-zag pattern that 
probably can be explained with what you say below: the signal is 
actually composite video, but it goes into a S-Video connector, so that 
luma and chroma are mixed together.

Got it. But as I said above, my signal comes out of the video camera or 
the satellite receiver as composite video, it cannot become S-Video, 
though the connector at the other end of the cable is S-Video.

I believe the card is okay, just the RCA input connector is damaged. I 
will try to fix it by myself or with some external help. The problem I 
encounter right now can be explained as above, I think.

I suspected it was so. As I said above, I will try to fix the RCA 
connector and see if I can record againg from composite video, since I 
simply don't have any source with S-Video output connector, unfortunately.
