We're working on introducing a video_device_state that will likely be passed as an argument to the ioctl handlers, and we thought that not removing the void *priv argument yet could mean less churn in drivers when we add the new argument, taking over the void *priv. However, the state should be passed through an explicitly typed pointer, so we'll have to patch all drivers anyway. I suppose we could drop the void pointer now, and add a new pointer later.
