 Subject: 2.0L 8V conversion question

For those of you who have done the A3 ABA short block swap (into an A2 with
the non-crossflow head), I've got a quick question. What's the "best"
distributor setup? I have three distributors at my disposal: one from an
old '80 Rabbit, one from an A3 2.0L, and one from my 1.8L RD (currently in
 use). >>

If the 80 Rabbit dist is points based (which most likely it is), you can't
use it with a CIS-E or Digifant electronic ignition system.
Otherwise, there is no difference between using the A3 or 1.8L RD as a base,
since there is no "curve" in an hall sender distributor. An old mechanical
dist like the 80 Rabbit has an ignition curve built into its operation, and
can be altered for performance. An electronic dist simply tells the coil to
fire, and the actual timing of the firing is based in the fuel injection or
ignition ECU (depending on system).
All you have to do is provide a 4 window trigger wheel for the CIS-E or
Digifant system, which the A3 dist does not use.

Todd
