You know, I think I actually have one of these beasts on my 89 GTI 16v. There is a bracket that mounts to the passenger side strut tower, and then connects to the block with a small gas-charged shock- about the size of a tailgate lift shock. I just noticed this the other day... I guess the PO put it on there.
