Where are you located?  What are the emissions devices?

Normally I'd think of this as some sort of gross PCV valve failure. I don't know whether the VW 16V employs a PVC system, and if so, in what countries. Generally almost all modern (like under 15 years old) cars in the USA utilize some kind of system by which crankcase gas pressure is vented into the intake, and it might involve a filter or valve which is intended to let the gases pass while keeping the oil in the crankcase. Failure of this valve would result in oil in the intake.

YMMV.  Where ecactly was the oil?
