Kris,

Yes, you will have to modify the plastic thingy to get the head unit to fit.
Mine was already "modified" by the HACK that put the pathetic stereo that
was in mine when I bought it, so I didn't need to "modify" it any further.
My advice is to use a zip or utility knife and go VERY slow and easy, and
you won't carve things up too bad.

Crutchfield also said that my Kenwood wouldn't go right in, but I had no
problems and mine is completely flush with the dash and not protruding like
some poor setups I've seen. Anyway, the key to getting that done is to
drill out the factory head unit support in the back of the dash. It's that
metal bracket that sticks out and makes it so the head unit won't go all the
way in. It is riveted, and getting a drill in is a little bit of an issue,
but once I got that out, I had no problems.

HTH,
Brice

Subject: headunit fitment q's

What size headunit's can I fit in my '89 GTI? According to
Crutchfield I can fit up to a 6 3/8" depth but one of the headunit's
I'm looking at (Blaupunkt Boston) is 6 5/8". Is crutchfield just full of
it? Also, will I have to modify the trim ring on the dash in order to
get it to fit? TIA
