Subject: RE: Clutch Query & Bodywork

Sorry no speedvision here so I miss the WRC Coverage in person. I follow
along on the Rally-L List. However I'm not talking about WRC rally or US
Prorally when I make that Example, naturally in those open situations an
4WD will beat a FWD car. You'll note elsewhere in my post that I make an
example (perhaps poorly stated) where a FWD VW (Jon Nichols) will sometimes
place up among the 4WD cars. He runs mostly canadian and some US
rallies. He does it with a VERY well prepared and driven car.
The example I was making was that many 4WD cars will not turn in
as easily as a FWD car will, on really tight and twisty courses the 4WD
advantage can be neutralized by this and a FWD can be very competative in
THAT Situation, As soon as the course opens up or with more sweepers the
4WD's ability to better put the power down will take over. I don't know
where you are located but if you get the chance, upper NY, Michigan,
Minnesota etc. all have ice racing programs. If they have a really tight
course the FWD's can turn similar times to the 4WD.s RWD's usually aren't
in the running.

Here's my take on the WRC:
On tarmac traction is less of an issue, Weight & HP ratios are more
important, hence a FWD car that weights less and turns better than a 4WD
can do some serious damage, Once you hit gravel or snow traction becomes a
major issue which is where 4WD's strength's come into play. Weight & HP are
still important factors but meaningless if you can't apply them.

so the FWD's that weigh less and make decent power
