I would agree that A2 VW's aren't competative on a National level, but go to
a local SCCA IT (Regional only AFAIK)race and you'll see A1's and A2's
dominate in ITC and ITB. The 1.8 16V's are classed in ITA and aren't as
competative and I believe (Matt?) the 2.0 16V's are in ITS. As far as newer
VW's being competative in road racing it seems as if VW has decided that
Audi will play a bigger role in motorsports. They did well last year at
LeMans and plan on returning this year. There is also a New Beetle Cup and
Lupo Cup series in Germany. I also think I read at VW Vortex how VW is
sponsoring a new Formula Vee series...

They're ten year old cars.  In the late eighties, the A2 Golf was one of the

most competitive cars (in its class) in most of  Europe, especially in BTCC,

and Rallies.
