<<FYI, the hydraulic rear mount is stiffer than the solid one. the solid
mount is actually VERY flimsy. you can move even a brand new solid rear
mount quite a bit with minimal effort. >>
When I first got my '91, the motor mounts were, of course, slightly
toasted. So I said "gee, maybe I'll try another hydraulic mount, maybe
they're not so bad". So I got a new front hydraulic mount and put it in. It
was better, but there was still a noticeable amount of drivetrain slack.
Drove it like that for a month. Then, I started getting sick of feeling
the engine rock forwards or backwards as I pressed on the gas, or let off. I
had no money, so I got a USED front rubber mount, and stuck a piece of hose
through the top gap of it, and put it in place of the hydro one. The second
I let out the clutch in 1st gear, I already noticed a difference. There is
no comparison. The hydraulic front mount just allows too much engine
movement for any sort of spirited driving.
Matthew, you are right, the rubber front mount is shitty and wears out
fast, but that's the truth about ALL VW A2 motor mounts. The solid rubber is
simply the least shitty of them all.
When I had my '87, my friend had a '92 GLI, the first time I drove it,
all I could think was "these motor mounts suck". Funny thing was, I told him
he might need new mounts, and he said he had just replaced them.
The rear passenger side mount is not as bad. The rubber one is still the
way to go (IMHO), but the hydro one isn't terrible, it only has a little bit
more slack. I put a rubber one in my car, about 1 1/2 years ago, and it's
still perfect.
I'll also admit that if you don't drive that hard, you may not notice the
annoying engine movement that the (especially the front) hydro mounts cause.
I have a rubber front mount with a homemade poly insert. Got rid of
almost all engine movement, and there's only a little more vibration.
Alex.
