hey, its pretty simple, its the bendix at the starter, its pretty straight
forward to replace it. Its a bosch spare part, its unexpensive so order it
and do it yourself if you know how to remove and re install the starter, it
would be reasonable now that the starter motor is off the car to have it
serviced.

New problem:

The starter's solenoid doesn't always get the small gear onto the flywheel,
so the starter rotates without turning over the engine. I have to try 3-4
times before the gear meshes. Is this an indication of something beginning
to fail? I simply don't wish to have to push-start the car someday soon.
