This has been discussed at length on the GTI VR6 and VW VR6 mailing lists.
The consensus seems to be that they are very close in overall performance.
They do lean towards the SP-9000 being better in the wet by a small margin,
and the SP-8000 being better in the dry. Looking at their respective tread
designs, it's not surprising. Of course, the negatives are the SP-9000 is
roughly 1/3 more expensive than an SP-8000 in the same size, and the SP-8000
isn't currently available in some of the most popular sizes.
