I had a similar problem , except that the numbers 2 and 3 would leak as soon as the motor warmed up - not even driven out the garage , this was using a reinz head gasket and then a elring head gasket. I then tried a locally made gasket - Payen , which it silicone coated and which is a lot thicker than the previous 2. I used a set of used head blots (used on the motor from new for about 1 hour) and did the torque sequence as follows: 1. 50 nm 2. 80nm 3. 90 degrees 4. 60 degrees. This is with a decked block and a shaved head almost down to the maximum ( about half a millimeter left to go).
Some tips: You should also wait 30 minutes between sequences for the head to "settle". Make sure the holes in the block are properly cleaned out , not half full with oil. The threads on the bolts should be lightly oiled. Obviously there should be nothing between the 2, like make sure the pistons are all half way up/down , the exhaust manifold is not obstructing the head. This has seemed to have solved my head gasket problem. This is on a 2.0 16v Desmond > Delivered-To: <[email protected]> > Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 01:59:47 -0700 > From: Steve Brunell <[email protected]> > Subject: Head Installation Issues > To: [email protected] > Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit > Importance: Normal > X-MSMail-Priority: Normal > X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2314.1300 > X-Priority: 3 (Normal) > > Anybody had problems getting the head gasket to seal when putting on a newly > reconditioned cylinder head?
