Is you problem urgent because its siezed up and your belts keep snapping?
If so, you could just electrically disconnect it. I had that problem a ways
back. The secondary pulley on there should spin even if the one that spins
the A/C compressor doesn't. Or I think you could just turn off the A/C and
not use the defrost...then you'd be fine too.

If that ain't your problem and its really gotta come out, check out below.
Its a discussion from VW Vortex 16V room on the topic when I asked the same
question. Towards the bottom of the list of replies someone says that if
you remove the A/C you can just grab an A2 8V alternator pulley, swap it for
the one you have, and use a Gates 7445belt.

I'm actually planning on tring this...A/C is out...I just have to get to the
yard to find an 8V alternator pulley. ANYBODY on the list have a parts 8V
laying around with the alternator still in it? I'll take the pulley.

I'd like to remove all air conditioning components from my '87 16V GTI. The
coolant is all gone, compressor is seized, I live in Wisconsin so I only
need it for defrosting, and its just a bunch of cabbage to work around in my
engine compartment.
Anyone know where to find a replacement bracket with pulleys to mount in
there in place of the compressor? Can anyone provider any guidance on this
whatsoever?

Thanks in advance,
adam

Fred,...thats just the bracket and pully right? You would still need the
block off plates for the firwall, the non-ac radiator hose, the new fan box
in the dash and the dash lever asembly/trim plate to do it right...

For 180 clams what's in the kit? Who makes it? Is this the price of a new
set-up or is it a used one you have access to? What else will need to be
done? The price seems to approach that of a new remanufac. compressor even.

i was able to remove the compressor/lines/condensor from the car without any
additional parts. the lines and condensor just come out. you can mount the
alternator where the ac compressor is mounted. if you take a good look at
your alternator you can see how it will fit. if you try this you will have
questions, so ask.

Here is one of two simple ways to remove the A/C. This is the way my friend
and I did it in our cars:
Rip out the compressor, the A/C hoses, and all the other A/C components that
are under the hood.
Get an alternator pulley from an A2 8V car. I got one for 5 bucks from a
junkyard.
Swap the pulleys.
Get a gates 7445 belt or the equivalent.
Leave the alternator in its original location. The belts will line up
perfect.
You're done. Total cost: 12 bucks. Total time: 1.5 hours.

This is what a v-dub freak from the GTI enthusiasts had to say about the a/c
removal process. I've heard different things, some people say you need to go
through all of this. Others say all you need is one pulley and bracket from
a A2 with power steering and without a/c. I hope someone can clear this
up...
Step 1: Go to the junkyard. Find a car with the same engine as yours
less A/C (ie. if you have power steering, find a A/C-free power steering
setup.) You will need the following parts - upper alternator bracket
(and that metal with the hole, if there is one), Lower alternator
bracket, alternator pulley, water pump pulley, and crank pulley.

Step 2: Pull previously mentioned parts out of your car, along with the
A/C compressor and (if you're never going to use A/C again) any A/C
hoses that get in your way. On the Scirocco I also pulled out the
condenser and anything else I could find and hacked the pipes off right up
next
to the firewall. Make sure you have the right parts before you hack
anything!

Step 3: Install the parts you salvaged in step 1.

The only side effect I've noticed is that your idle could be a little
high when the engine thinks it has to compensate for A/C (when the
ventillation system is on an A/C setting.)

If you buy want to buy the RPI kit, you'll get the following parts - upper
alternator bracket (and that metal with the hole, if there is one),
Lower alternator bracket, alternator pulley, water pump pulley. And
probably a snazzy looking sticker.

I'll say it again:
Easiest, fastest way to do it:
Remove ALL the underhood A/C components.
Leave the alternator in its original location.
Get an A2 8V alternator pulley and swap it on.
Get a gates 7445 belt.
You're done.

obviously there are several ways of doing it (all of the ways posted seem to
be working), good luck on which ever you choose.

The easiest way to do it is to buy a car that never had A/C. Thats what I
did. 1988 GTI 16V from florida with no A/C. Probably a pretty rare car.
